Why do American drivers get so hot and bothered by the concept of zipper merging?

They would rather wait in line like lemmings than merge at the end where I merge. I zoom past the line of traffic and politely but firmly force my way in.

Zipper merges are the norm in California.

Zipper merging becomes second nature in a competitive driving situation like in urban California. If you don't do it, you wait forever.

I can do it but for the most part I like to just stay in one lane (usually the middle).  Lane changes increase the chance of accidents.

Also if everyone just stayed in one lane we would all be better off.  Changing lanes introduces inefficiency as the drivers behind you often have to brake.  This creates a chain reaction.

Not accurate. Zipper merges are very efficient. Far more efficient than queuing up in one lane and leaving unused roadway.  Books have been written on this subject.

This summer I had a bagger go insane with wild rage when he was acting as “lane police” and blocking people from zipper merging and I went totally around him (and slightly off road) to make best use of the roadway.

In theory.  What happens here is that some asshole plows down the open lane and then forces his way in to cause another accident.  This is actually not how it is supposed to work from what I understand.

It is like in the other topic about traffic lights where someone suggested roundabouts instead of traffic lights.  Well if you did that here you would see a 300% increase in accidents because people drive like total morons and would constantly cut in front even when they do not have the right of way.

Baggers are so destructive to society.
