I actually though it was a pretty good idea.

so the idea is instead of getting EBT cards - which can be traded for drugs, money or something else fungible - you get a box of food. This is much more difficult to trade. This is actually pretty brilliant.

I know you work-shytters won't like it because it's a Trump idea, but it makes perfect sense.

No.  The dumbest idea in human history was Obama's HSR in Tampa.

I like the idea of calling it 'Trump's Club', similar to 'Sam's Club'.

Giving food to the hungry.  It took the brilliance of President Trump to come up with that?

Re: The Trump Food Box might, literally, be the stupidest idea in human history.

I like the idea. I'm tired of seeing immigrants and riff-raff buying sweets and junk food with their EBT cards. The program is supposed to provide food to the needy, not a blank check for treats to be traded and sold.

The main problem is that people don't buy wholesome, nutritious food. They buy pre-processed expensive crap. The poor need to learn to cook and save their money.

Sadly, I think much of the ideation is about identifying the residence of illegals as well.

It would also need to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and preferences including, Halal, vegan, vegetarian and low salt/low carb/low fat.

There's also no absolute reason to limit the food acquisition to just US farmers. It's a nice idea, but some thing might be much cheaper imported rather than sweetheart subsidies to US farmers.

If the boxes are going to be all Corn, wheat, dairy and pork-fat products, that's going to be a bust. Actually the EBTY card program was supposed to address those sorts of concerns, but is simply to easy to scam and does not reasonably limit the purchase of sweets and brand named products in favor of store brands.

It reduces human dignity. It’s a slap in the face. On the practical side it’s wasteful since most people won’t want / need a significant portion of the box since the box isn’t tailored.

The food stamp fraud story line is such a joke. The known fraud rates are a couple percent. Even if it was massive fraud - say 25% - the money lost would be a drop in the bucket compared to the waste and fraud in something that is a true problem like military contracting.

Concern over food stamp fraud is just a way for people who don’t need help to try and punish those who do. It’s not a real problem.

Yes, what we need is MORE accountability for the poor and hungry, and LESS for billionaires and corporations.

How much did you donate to the local food bank last year?  Any money? Any food? Any time?

Oh right...

Re: The Trump Food Box might, literally, be the stupidest idea in human history.

I have a lot of different comments about this, and have been waiting until I have a laptop and a moment.

Food stamps are always part of the farm bill, and the traditional idea was to prop up farmers, which the Republicans like, and help the poor, which the Democrats like. That balance worked for many years.

Trump's administration has a problem. They would like to crack down on trade but realize that one of the most significant exports the US has is food. So why not kill two birds with one stone?

If I were an ag lobbyist, I would be all over this one. I'd push whatever produce or area I represent and argue it is vital. The food boxes will contain not an actual reflection of what people eat but a reflection of who is the best lobbyist. Crony capitalism.

Its instructive to look at what has happened to other countries who have tried the same thing. The food boxes, untouched, go on sale.

Will the recipients be able to sue the government and the suppliers when they end up finding poison and other harmful stuff in the food?  You know it is going to happen too.

No. They would be allowed to get a refund for personal money spent.

Also it makes the government directly responsible for what the poor eat.  So if it ends up being harmful to them then the poor ought to be able to sue for damages and be compensated.  Trump suggests "Beans and pasta" but that isn't necessarily healthy.  For example starch is horrible for diabetics and not too great for anyone really.

Another important point -- and I've argued this with you over the government owning almost any service like food and yes like housing.

The government under sovereign immunity is almost never liable. But a private company always is. So if you are interested in accountability for safe food, you'll be for the government giving money and private corporations supplying food.

Re: The Trump Food Box might, literally, be the stupidest idea in human history.

There is this interesting argument that Mulvany made when he announced this -- the idea is that the government could buy the food at half price wholesale, and thus could actually be more efficient at getting aid to people.

This view is just plain wrong.

Its certainly true that a large bulk purchase of a product would be lower in price per unit. However, someone has to divide the portions, someone has to pack them, some truck has to deliver them. Will the government take on all these roles?

Most grocery stores make a profit of something like 1% on staples. The highest markups are on prepared foods, that is why you walk into any Whole Foods and you find tons of prepared items.
