There’s No Scientific Basis for Race—It's a Made-Up Label

A long article but worth your time to read.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/maga … ce-africa/

Morton believed that people could be divided into five races and that these represented separate acts of creation. The races had distinct characters, which corresponded to their place in a divinely determined hierarchy. Morton’s “craniometry” showed, he claimed, that whites, or “Caucasians,” were the most intelligent of the races. East Asians—Morton used the term “Mongolian”—though “ingenious” and “susceptible of cultivation,” were one step down. Next came Southeast Asians, followed by Native Americans. Blacks, or “Ethiopians,” were at the bottom. In the decades before the Civil War, Morton’s ideas were quickly taken up by the defenders of slavery.

...

Today Morton is known as the father of scientific racism. So many of the horrors of the past few centuries can be traced to the idea that one race is inferior to another that a tour of his collection is a haunting experience. To an uncomfortable degree we still live with Morton’s legacy: Racial distinctions continue to shape our politics, our neighborhoods, and our sense of self.

This is the case even though what science actually has to tell us about race is just the opposite of what Morton contended.

Phil may have a point here.  Back in the SFBA, many blacks have a "ghetto" mentality, although nobody has put them in ghettos for 2 generations.  Even the wealthy ones look for a way to "get over" on others, although this was not the case with the WWII generation I had a lot of dealings with in the early days.

Here in Boise, the blacks are either Americans or foreign refugees.  The Americans act like everybody else, and nobody cares.  The refugees are pretty easy to spot by their accents, but they seem very happy to be here and living the American dream.  Rarely do they commit crimes.  One refugee did commit the most serious crime - murder of a 3 year old - against another refugee family.

He will get the opportunity to pull every legal trick in the book by lawyers, but he will ultimately be exterminated.

There are very clear average IQ differences by race, evolution works on the brain as it does the entire body.

You can read the article, we are all genetically the same.

The fact that some people have language skills and cultural knowledge to do well educationally (which is what IQ measures) is because of the difference of opportunity and education.

"We are all genetically the same."

This is unequivocally the most untrue thing ever posted here.

Racism is mostly just about FEAR.  That's a fact.  These racists here are afraid of people who are different than themselves.  The past crap about White Superiority was also a byproduct of this.  It was puffery meant to hide their own insecurities.  The same for lynching black men who were accused of being with white women or in the castration of them as slaves -- the white male masters were insecure.

It's much the same today really.  Most racists are absolutely obsessed with guns.  It helps them to feel more at ease from their fears and insecurities in relation to non-white males.

Meaningless.  We have genes in common with banana plants. (60%)

I agree that it is largely about fear. Its also about trying to create shared stories or identities.

Re: There’s No Scientific Basis for Race—It's a Made-Up Label

No, Scientists decided after WWII that thy would deny the concept of race. Take note of the health forms you will out where they have you indicate ethnicity (which is race).

Does it dictate a persons character or potential in e general sense? No.  But Race is a factor in genetics as relates to healthcare choices.

Fearing "race" only empowers those who would use race negatively. Kind of how blacks have taken back the word, "Buck" (amongst themselves), and yet, unfortunately empower the negative bias of the word by enforcing a cultural barrier to it's use for others.

By making Race a naughty word, you're empowering racism of the negative sort.

I wonder if this old value still holds true as we are able to process the entire genome? I will guess 99% is a bit high, as we also have (according to race) about 4% neanderthal genes.

The article points out that human to human has less genetic variation than chimp to chimp.

We are a very new species and just haven't drifted all that far.

Yeah, real new. Only 7000 generations in.

Yes, but with all the cross breeding mutations have almost completely been folded into everyone else.

As the article points out, human skin colors have gone dark to white to dark again.

There is no inherent genetic differences between someone in Africa and someone in Tokyo. That is the point. If you want to look at why literacy rates differ, look at the education society provides.

That's simply false, though the appearance characteristics of race may be skimming the surface. The health risk factors are absolute and irrefutable, and those are distinct racial differences.

Again you argue semantics not the generally agreed upon definition of race. You are agian arguing on the basis that there is no taxonomic racial level of hierarchy– therefore race does not exist.

Maybe we are all very closely related though distinct, interbreeding species?

I even think females are poised to branch off as a sub-species of their own.
