So, what were you doing 18 years ago today on 9/11/2001?

I was getting ready to leave for work at eSpeedient. Lori was already at work. She called me asking if I knew what had happened. I had not. She said I probably shouldn’t go to work. I lived in Niles at the time and eSpeedient was in River North near the Loop. So she was worried something could happen.

I decided to go to work anyway.

On the way I had to get my phone fixed. It was a tiny little red Nokia that was popularized by the move Charlie’s Angels. So I did that first and then headed downtown.

I was in the office alone because my two partners were traveling. By then the ground stop was in place. I spoke with them and they were in Philadelphia unclear how they would get home.

I decided this was sort of a nutty day and went home in the early afternoon after being at work only a couple hours.

When I got home I posted on FC for the rest of the day. I remember sitting at my PC and realizing how quiet it was with the ground stop because my apartment literally was on a direct flight path to O’Hare. I was very close to the airport so the planes were fairly low altitude when they flew over. But none flew over that day or for a few more after that.

I’ll never forget.

I was working in LA and my parents came for a visit. I remember listening to the radio thinking some dumbass with Cessna made a mistake. On my way to work the details started coming out. My parents where scheduled to fly home that morning, they called me on my cellphone asking me what to do.

Sitting at my rented house with my then live-in girlfriend in a small Illinois college town.  I was writing an email when she came in to tell me about it.  I spent the rest of the day pretty much just on FC and watching the news.  The next month was pretty surreal.

Re: So, what were you doing 18 years ago today on 9/11/2001?

I remember when the first plane hit it was big news, but not yet apparent that it had been intentional or not the act fo a single crazy person. Before the 2nd plane hit and the the buildings came down, then it got scary wondering if this was all out war and "what is coming next?".

I remember I was very busy as usual and sort of brushed off news of the first plane, assuming it had been a close call sort of thing. Like the wing clipped the building or something. I remember a coworker was quit upset because a relative works in one of the buildings. But how would they know the extant of the damage or what was to come ? Aside from reasonable concern...and they were annoyed with me for not being devastated at the initial news.

As I recall the 2nd plane hitting dead on and the 1st plane's head on hit were only apparent once the tv got rolled in and the news turned on.

I've always felt a little bad about not caring too much about the 1st plane news, but I really had no idea as to the damage done or the resultant damage and loss of life that was due and  was under extreme workplace pressure at the time, as usual, the kind of deadline pressure that was only superseded by the shock of the events as they unfolded, even then I was required to trudge on and continue working against deadline. The pressure didn't ease in that  environment until mid-afternoon.

Ground stop is where people in trailer park gravel pit flyover zones notice the lack of continuous 100 decibel jet traffic when it ceases for the first time that they can remember.

You don't have to apologize. I have problems with authority and now that you run this board, occasionally I may act out.

Re: So, what were you doing 18 years ago today on 9/11/2001?

On 9/11 I was living in Boston and working for a high tech startup, writing web frameworks in java. I was listening to Imus in the Morning after the first plane hit. I had remembered that an aircraft had hit the Empire State Building once accidentally, so I wasn't overly alarmed.

Then the second plane hit, and I knew it was a terrorist attack. I got up and took the train to work, as I had no internet at home and wanted to post on FC. I remember all the lost financial folks on their way home in the train station. Everyone was in a daze.

I got to work and my posts on FC are still visible today, thanks to Shlomo.
