What are your Thanksgiving plans?

I will be fixing a very simple but festive meal for myself:

1. Phil's famous onion dip
2. Phil's famous holiday cider
3. Baked or sauteed fish (depends on what kind of fish I can find)
4. Red lentils with clarified butter
5. Basmati rice
6. pecan rum pie
7. alcohol (later)

And I will be making asiago cheese!!!

By ourselves in Boise.  The wife has ordered a turkey and she plans to prepare the whole thing.  Woody's turkey, stuffing, potatoes (of course), veggies and gravy.

Fortunately, we were able to score some 1/2 sized tins of cranberry sauce, for the hot turkey sandwiches to come.

See, I don't eat turkey anymore (but I might go back to eating it since it is a holiday food), but I do fondly recall turkey sandwiches.

Some interesting Covid economic data - sales of Thanksgiving purchases are way down (potatoes, pies, etc). People are even buying smaller turkeys as family are not coming in (Spanky excluded because Turkey is his favorite food).

In case you are too cheap to purchase a data plan good enough to watch youtube video:

1. welsh rarebit with a poached egg on top, not too runny
2. bacon
3. scones
4. butter, cream (this means clotted cream), raspberry jam
5. sausages
6. lapsang tea

Driving one mile to have dinner with family.

Beats riding 45 miles to have dinner with family as we did every year when I was a kid.

Sadly, most of those family members are gone or too far away to get together.

I have old Christmas and Thanksgiving pictures of my family.

Almost nobody in those pictures are still alive. The house they are taken in has been torn down, A few of the young children in the pictures have kids of their own.

I'd go for it all except I don't like English sausages.

That's right, we're also having a pumpkin pie.  These traditions are important to my wife and I enjoy them with her.

Our childhood "Thanksgiving House" (45 miles away) was torn down a few years ago. It was built by my grandfather and great uncle (who lived there), a beautiful home on a large piece of property. Huge moldings all over the house and a large staircase, all built of hardwoods. Stained glass window. HUGE Thanksgiving and Memorial Day extended family get-togethers at that place. The house was a part of the family.

Now the land is occupied by several McMantions, crammed in shoulder-to-shoulder.

Things change.

To travel this Thanksgiving is to endanger lives. That is the truth. I wish it were not that way.

I was listening to an interview with someone who over the past few months has lost six family members to Covid. One by one they died.

I have a few relatives that I wish I could see. I want to fly to Florida and see my friend, or to New Mexico and see my cousins. But I cannot. It is too risky.

One can fairily often find an entire family that dies in a tragic car accident but that doesn't stop people from driving, you need to unplug from your democrat news feed and grow a pair aww

This is not the year for holiday travel.  My wife was going to visit her mother, but China Flu crept into the nursing home and all visits are off.  Cases are up, hospitalizations are up, deaths are up.

It's a stay at home year.
