Exactly, thanks...this is a good way to explain it.

The point is that liability insurance won't solve the problems that its defenders believe it will, and to the extent it exists only to increase the cost of owning firearms it could face a valid constitutional challenge.

I know they want to do something, but this "feel good, social justice" nonsense is just that, nonsense.

Just like that new law requiring background checks in order to buy ammunition.  It was recently decided by your state that if an illegal person ILLEGALLY tries to buy a gun and gets turned down, should he be reported to ICE?  Oh, NO!!  You have a sanctuary State.  I'm sure the same standard will apply to ammunition sales.

Greetings from Idaho!

Insurance could address the civil side though.  Wrongful death claims, medical bills, pain and suffering, etc.  Civil claims are made all the time in cases where someone intentionally broke the law... ask OJ.

In theory there's no reason you couldn't have no-fault insurance covering civil liability. It already exists for car insurance, where most accidents are caused by breaking the law in some way, even just a moving violation.

In those cases, it is accidental, not intentional damage that is covered. In your auto example, someone might run a stop sign (a crime) and hit a car, but it is not an intentional act.

I guarantee you if you posted an online screed that said "People who drive BMWs are assholes and their cars deserve to be crushed!" and then you go out and hit a BMW your insurance will not accept a claim.

“Liability coverage is designed to protect against accidental damages, most of which involving guns would be covered under a homeowner’s insurance policy. While some policies may provide coverage for liability stemming from the intentional use of a firearm for defensive purposes, no liability insurance product covers intentional acts of malicious violence, whether committed with a gun, a car, or any other instrument that is used as a weapon to deliberately harm people,” said Grande. “It is inconceivable that any insurer would offer such coverage, either as part of a homeowners or renters policy or on a stand-alone basis.”

In CA, they're doing that 8 ways from Sunday.  The reason they're trying to keep Trump off the primary ballot there, is they have like 10 or more new taxes on the ballot, requiring voter approval.  If they can keep Trump voters at home, they hope they can pass all those taxes.  That's the plan.

If that happens, MORE moderates and conservatives will be moving to Idaho, and that's part of their plan, too.

Democrats are evil.

Note though, coverage for your own intentional acts is not what's being proposed:

According to Liccardo's proposal, the insurance would cover "accidental discharge of the gun, and for the intentional acts of third parties who steal, borrow, or otherwise acquire the gun." It would not cover "liability of the policyholder for his or her own intentional conduct."

...which sounds a little more realistic, but wouldn't address that many situations.  I don't think it'd do shyt for the costs of gun violence.

Re: A California mayor wants to require all gun owners to have liability insurance

Let me guess, he has ties to the insurance industry? The actual risk associated with gun ownership is low. Remember there are more guns than people in the U.S.. The problem is mental health, Trump got that right. Sadly what was revealing was how the far left skipped right past mental health being the issue for their favorite gun control mantra. Which Honestly, is being championed by Jewish celebrities who knows what their agenda there is? Maybe an idea about disarming  non-jews in general to forestall a 2nd Holocaust, sort of neurotic ideation?

Anyway the guns aren't going away. I'm very liberal and I don't like the idea of being browbeaten into being disarmed by celebrities. Plenty of people shouldn't have access to weapons, but taking away everyone's weapons is not the answer.

Re: A California mayor wants to require all gun owners to have liability insurance

This sort of idea will fail in the Supreme court as being a tax on gun ownership that unilaterally limits access to wealthy people. Who will lose their guns, the poor. Who won't Gun nuts and crazies who will happily pay to keep their guns and then go and shoot the poor unarmed people.
